Check that the ordinary route fits
Use the provincial steps only after confirming your authority to sell and any outstanding interest. If another issue applies, review that situation too before arranging release.

Distinguish a lost printout from an incomplete transfer or disputed owner. Have the VIN and available records ready for the registration authority, then confirm the acceptable replacement or transfer evidence.
Check missing-paper routes by provinceConfirm the creditor or lessor’s requirements
Contact the lender or lessor before agreeing to release the vehicle. Confirm any payout, consent and discharge arrangements. A registry search does not itself remove a debt or give a lessee authority to sell.
Read the lien and lease guideEstablish the estate representative’s authority
Identify who administers the estate and which provincial documents support the proposed sale. Possessing the keys or being a beneficiary does not settle the authority question. Confirm required originals, copies and signatures before collection.
Check estate documents by provinceConfirm who can sign for this transaction
Tell the registration authority whether the vehicle is co-owned, company-owned or being handled by a representative. Ask which consent and authorisation documents are needed. Permission to enter a property is separate from authority to sell the car.
Confirm ownership and claim release
Ask the claim representative who owns the vehicle after settlement and whether retention or release is permitted. Resolve outstanding inspection or lender questions before arranging an independent sale or removing components.
Read the insurance write-off guideSeparate release from the authority to sell
Locate the vehicle and establish the custodian’s release requirements. Permission to retrieve belongings does not authorise sale or collection. Use the relevant reporting process for a vehicle you do not own; a purchase enquiry does not settle storage charges or an impoundment.

Prepare the record

Check the handover

Alberta: your document steps
Resolve the selected situation before using these provincial starting points. An estate, disputed record or other exception can require additional documents and a different sequence.
Prepare the record
Prepare a sale record identifying the parties, vehicle and actual purchase amount. Alberta’s standard bill of sale describes the private-sale route; confirm a business-owned vehicle’s document requirements separately.
Check the handover
Check the names and addresses, VIN, vehicle description, amount and both parties’ signatures. Retain a completed copy rather than a blank signed form.
Keep the follow-up records
Ask a registry agent and your insurer about the applicable plate, registration and insurance actions. Physical collection does not complete those actions for you.

Saskatchewan: your document steps
Resolve the selected situation before using these provincial starting points. An estate, disputed record or other exception can require additional documents and a different sequence.
Prepare the record
Have the Transfer of Ownership document or an appropriate bill of sale available. Ask a motor licence issuer which evidence fits an unusual or incomplete record.
Check the handover
Record the seller, buyer, vehicle identity, purchase date and actual amount. Both parties sign the completed sale record, and you keep your copy.
Keep the follow-up records
Confirm the plate, registration and insurance actions with your issuer. The bill of sale records the transaction; it does not resolve an outstanding lien or estate authority.

Québec: your document steps
Resolve the selected situation before using these provincial starting points. An estate, disputed record or other exception can require additional documents and a different sequence.
Prepare the record
Have the registration certificate available and ask which document the business supplies: a recycler’s receipt or a dealer-recycler’s attestation of transaction.
Check the handover
Check the document against the vehicle and keep it. With a receipt, complete discarding through SAAQ; ownership remains in your name with discarded status. Present a dealer-recycler’s attestation at a SAAQ outlet for the ownership-transfer route.
Keep the follow-up records
Remove the plate before release and retain the resulting SAAQ record. Check SAAQ restrictions involving suspension, seizure or an active impoundment before proceeding. Contact your insurer separately.
