Can You Scrap a Car Without Ownership Papers in Canada?
A missing registration paper does not always prevent a vehicle sale, but you must resolve the ownership evidence before releasing the car. Start by identifying whether you lost your own document, never completed a previous transfer or are acting for somebody else. Which kind of missing-paper problem do you have?

Keep the VIN, any old registration, bill of sale and correspondence together. A set of keys identifies access to the car; it does not explain the complete transfer history.
How do you resolve missing records in British Columbia?

How do Ontario owners replace or correct a permit?
Ask ServiceOntario for a replacement when your vehicle permit is lost or damaged. Have identification and the VIN or plate information available. Explain an incorrect owner name or unfinished previous transfer separately from the missing paper.

Where do Alberta and Saskatchewan owners start?
Contact the relevant registry agent or motor licence issuer with the vehicle’s current record and purchase history. Explain whether the record exists in your name. Online access is useful for available records, but it does not settle a disputed transfer.
In Alberta, begin with the vehicle registration service and a registry agent. Alberta distinguishes proof of ownership, such as a bill of sale, from registration for public-road use. Ask which evidence applies to your intended parts or recycling sale; do not assume that road registration is the task you need to complete.

How do Québec owners obtain a registration certificate?
Check SAAQclic for a printable certificate, then use SAAQ’s replacement route if it is unavailable. The options depend on the owner and circumstances, including whether the request is made inside Québec. A representative may need additional authorization.

What should you confirm before agreeing to collection?
Confirm the acceptable record, required signatures and remaining official action before handover. You can discuss the vehicle while resolving papers, but a proposed offer does not approve an ownership exception.

- Who must sign, and are originals or certified copies required?
- Does the vehicle’s previous registration jurisdiction change the process?
