Call the receiving location with the item, quantity, condition and container details before travelling. Household programmes may exclude business waste. Leave installed components in the vehicle unless removal has been separately agreed and can be handled appropriately.

Keep different items identified. Do not mix fluids or put an unidentified automotive chemical into a container intended for another product. Ask the facility how it wants an item presented before preparing it for transport.
A removed part requires identification and condition assessment before a buyer can decide whether it is useful. An online asking price does not prove a sale will occur. Include the work of storage, advertising and transport when comparing separate parts sales with a whole-vehicle offer.
Ask the intended recipient whether it accepts the specific component and what condition it requires. Identify the part accurately and disclose known faults. Donation or repurposing does not remove the need for appropriate handling, especially when an item contains fluids or potentially hazardous materials.
Confirm acceptance before transporting the item. Do not assume that a charity, workshop or household recycling collection can take every automotive part.
Tell the buyer before removing a component included in the vehicle assessment. Its removal changes the vehicle being offered and can change collection requirements. The value factors guide explains why completeness matters.

Identify the battery type before asking a facility to accept it. A conventional vehicle starter battery and a high-voltage traction battery require different handling arrangements. Do not describe either simply as “a car battery” when its type or condition is uncertain.
Transport Canada’s battery transport guidance describes requirements for batteries, including damaged or defective lithium batteries. Tell a qualified receiving facility about collision, fire or water exposure. Do not dismantle a high-voltage battery or prepare a damaged one for ordinary delivery based on a general recycling article.
Describe the item, its condition, its quantity and any material still attached. A facility can then explain whether it accepts that specific item and how it wants delivery arranged. Acceptance at one location does not establish acceptance at every location using a similar name.
Ask whether a fee, appointment or quantity limit applies. Keep the answer for the item you intend to bring. Do not leave rejected parts beside a collection point or assume that a household bin is an alternative disposal route.
Arrange a disposal option for the vehicle that will remain after dismantling. Missing wheels, an engine or other components change what is available for purchase and how it can be collected. An earlier complete-car offer is not a standing promise for a stripped shell.
Compare realistic part-sale proceeds with removal, storage and disposal work. A component that never finds a buyer remains your responsibility. Request a whole-car assessment before choosing to dismantle so the two options can be compared on consistent terms.
Keep any receipt or acceptance record that the receiving facility supplies. Identify the items delivered and retain the relevant correspondence. This helps distinguish completed disposal from an enquiry that never led to acceptance.
For a whole vehicle, keep the vehicle sale and registration records as well. A receipt for loose parts does not establish that the remaining vehicle has been sold or its ownership record completed.
Filter the disposal directory by the delivery province and the material already removed. Read the audience and acceptance conditions before contacting the receiving location. A programme locator, municipal example and referral service provide different levels of information.

Some rows identify municipal examples rather than a province-wide receiving network. Check your own municipality’s eligibility before using a programme in another city.
Programme information can change. Alberta’s current used-oil materials guidance includes an antifreeze expansion from August 2026, while older site requirements may describe the earlier scope. Keep the item identified and ask a receiving facility about it before moving it. An airbag, refrigerant-containing assembly, contaminated tank or damaged traction battery cannot be treated as ordinary scrap metal merely because it contains metal. Describe the component and condition without dismantling it to fit a collection category.
Ask whether the facility can receive that assembly intact, whether a qualified operator must handle it and whether an appointment or separate transport arrangement is needed. Do not drain fluids, vent refrigerant or handle high-voltage components to make a drop-off possible. If the receiving site declines the material, ask for an appropriate specialist or municipal referral instead of leaving it beside a collection point. Acceptance of a body panel does not establish acceptance of a complete vehicle or every attached component.
