How to Scrap an Inherited Car in Canada
An inherited car needs an authorized seller before it can be released for recycling. Being named as a beneficiary, possessing the keys and administering the estate are different roles. Identify the recorded owner and estate representative first, then use the procedure for the vehicle’s jurisdiction.
Who can arrange the sale of an estate vehicle?
Establish who has authority to act for the estate before signing a purchase record. The person managing collection may not be the person entitled to transfer the vehicle. A disputed estate or unclear ownership needs resolution before the car leaves.

Which estate route applies in British Columbia?
Match the ownership structure and intended recipient to ICBC’s estate checklist. The requirements differ between a transfer into the estate and a transfer to a purchaser. The estate’s circumstances also determine which supporting documents and signatures apply.
ICBC’s checklist distinguishes a valid will from intestacy and separates joint owners from tenants in common. It requires a jointly owned vehicle to transfer to surviving owners before a later third-party transfer. Company-owned vehicles remain company property rather than becoming estate vehicles merely because the company owner died. Use the ICBC estate-transfer checklist.

What does Québec require from the liquidator?
The liquidator completes SAAQ’s declaration and attends a service outlet with the successor or new owner for an ownership transfer. A liquidator is the person administering the succession. Confirm the estate route before attempting an ordinary online disposal action.

How should an Ontario estate prepare?
Identify the estate trustee and explain whether the vehicle is passing to a beneficiary or being sold to a buyer. Those routes can involve different evidence. Ask ServiceOntario which documents and signatures apply before setting the collection date.
Ontario’s specified-vehicle tax guidance addresses evidence for an estate beneficiary’s tax exemption. It does not establish one checklist for every third-party estate sale. Do not assume that an exemption for a beneficiary applies to the scrap buyer.
Have the permit, available estate authority documents and intended buyer details ready for the enquiry. Ask whether originals or certified copies are needed and how the seller should be identified on the transfer. Where do Alberta and Saskatchewan estates confirm documents?
Use an Alberta registry agent or Saskatchewan motor licence issuer to confirm the estate-specific transaction. Give the issuer the ownership structure, available authority documents and intended recipient. A registration cancellation is not a substitute for establishing who can sell.
Alberta lists a probated will or letters of administration among possible ownership documents in its registration guidance. That page concerns registration for road use; it does not mean every estate recycling sale requires every document listed there. Ask the agent about the actual sale before ordering inspections or additional paperwork.

What else should the representative resolve before handover?
Resolve finance, claims and payment instructions before completing the sale. The vehicle’s low value does not remove another party’s interest. Tell the buyer if the car is leased, financed, jointly owned or part of an active insurance claim.
Use the lien guide for creditor questions. Ask the estate representative how the buyer should identify the seller and payee. Do not distribute sale proceeds based on an informal assumption about who inherits them.
